Tribal Health and Wellness

Welcome to the MPHI Office of Tribal Health and Wellness!

MPHI has partnered with tribes, tribal organizations, and Urban Indian Health organizations, on more than 30 initiatives to promote the health and wellbeing of Native people.

This portfolio of work includes projects that have:

  • Addressed health concerns, including health education and promotion, tobacco use prevention and cessation, nutrition, physical activity, obesity, diabetes, cancer, infant mortality, adolescent health, mental health, and maternal-child health
  • Focused on high-priority public health issues and approaches, including: health equity; policy, systems, and environmental change strategies; community health assessment and community health improvement planning; coalition building; population surveillance and monitoring; public health system performance, accreditation and quality improvement, and evidence-based practice/practice-based evidence
  • Involved a variety of roles and responsibilities, including evaluation, training and technical assistance, program planning and development, strategic planning, facilitation, and translation and dissemination

Key factors contributing to the success of these initiatives include:

  • Tribal leader engagement throughout all phases of work
  • Community-based efforts that are tailored to the local culture, and tribally-driven toward goals identified by the tribe and using strategies selected by the tribe
  • Improvements in the availability and quality of data to monitor health disparities and risk factors
  • Strong relationships within tribes and with project partners that are mutually beneficial, and promote increased resource sharing and grantmaking for sustainable partnerships
