MPHI CEO Dr. Renée Branch Canady was featured in the 360 Perspective on MSU Today, the email newsletter from Michigan State University, discussing what motivates her, why health equity matters and the power of community. Canady spoke of predominant barriers to good health including issues of poverty, institutional racism, class discrimination and gender oppression. She believes the solution is to eliminate the root causes of differences in health outcomes and experiences. Canady says being healthy is related to the reasons why healthy choices aren’t more readily available for all people. She believes it is time public health transforms its practice and focus back to the root causes that precipitated the development of the health field. She encourages today’s public health professionals to recognize the need to change, and advance the changes that will improve the health of all.
