Health Promotion and Disease Prevention
The Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Program (HPDP) focuses on chronic disease prevention and health promotion at the state, local, and national level. Its core efforts involve translating scientific research and evidence-based interventions into program development and evaluation, social marketing, coalition development, and applied research. Professional disciplines represented include dietitians/nutritionists, health educators, researchers, evaluators, professional counselors, public health administrators, communication and community development experts, and psychologists.

Donna McLean received her Ph.D in Nutrition from Michigan State University in 1995. Dr. McLean is currently the Program Director for Health Promotion, Disease Prevention at MPHI. She has extensive experience in developing and implementing research and demonstration projects, facilitating community collaboration, evaluating results, and ensuring efficient operation of program initiatives. Dr. McLean has served as Principal Investigator for numerous state and federal funded grants that address healthy eating, physical activity promotion, and obesity prevention and control. She provides guidance, leadership and proposal design for successful grant writing teams. Dr. McLean has been with MPHI since 1995.

Shawn Cannarile received a Master's degree in Education from the University of Phoenix in 2005, and a Bachelor of Arts in Communication from Michigan State University in 1993. . She provides expertise in Asthma self-management in schools and coalition building.

Stephanie Halfmann, MS, RD received a Master’s Degree in Distance Education with a cognate in Nutrition from Michigan State University in 2004. Ms. Halfmann has been a Registered Dietician since 1996. Ms. Halfmann provides expertise in social marketing campaign development and implementation and is certified in focus group facilitation as well as extensive experience with nutrient analysis database usage.
