Cancer Control Services Program


The Cancer Control Services program provides epidemiological and evaluation expertise to the State of Michigan’s cancer control programs. It offers technical assistance in such areas as cancer prevention, screening, referral, tracking and follow up; partnership and coalition development; quality assurance and improvement; professional and public education; surveillance; strategic planning, database management, and administration. Expertise is also provided in statistics, financial analysis, data analysis, and nursing.

May Darwish-Yassine, Ph.D., has more than 15 years of experience in designing epidemiological research, and evaluation studies. Dr. Yassine has wide expertise in developing and integrating surveillance data to portray disease burden in populations. Her work supports evidence-based public health planning at the state level, and initiatives such as the Michigan Cancer Consortium and Comprehensive Cancer Control Programs. She has a special interest in analyzing disparity in disease outcomes and behavioral risk factors across population groups. Previous positions included directing the National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) ‘Data-based Cancer Intervention Research Program’ at the Indiana State Department of Health. She has worked as part of her post-doctoral studies at the department of internal medicine at the University of Michigan where she researched the epidemiology of type II diabetes mellitus. She has taught in chronic disease epidemiology, epidemiological principles and methods, and social medicine. Dr. Yassine received her Ph.D. in Epidemiologic Science from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, with specialty in chronic disease. She earned a Master of Science degree in Epidemiology and a BS in environmental health from the American University of Beirut.

Dr. Harris has over nine years experience designing, developing and maintaining the Michigan Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Information System (MBCIS). She specializes in statistical analyses of large databases and in the use of data to improve the delivery of clinical services in a continuous quality improvement framework. Dr. Harris received a Ph.D. in Social Psychology from Michigan State University.

Ms Wing has several years experience working in the areas of research design, survey design, project design, qualitative/quantitative research, data analysis, evaluation, and GIS mapping. Ms.Wing received a Master of Science degree in 2000 in Environmental Health Technology from the University of Washington and began working with the Cancer Control Services Program in 2001.
